Meeting notes without a subscription: what to buy once
Most meeting notes apps bill by the month. A handful sell once, and two good ones cost nothing. If you want an AI note taker with no subscription, this is the list, sorted by how you pay.
I make one of the tools in the table, so read this as a rival's list. Every price below comes from the vendor's own page, read on 5 October 2026. Prices move. Treat the date as part of the fact.
I compared nine local-first tools by what they do in July. This page asks a narrower question: what leaves your bank account, and how often.
The table
| How you pay | Tool | Price | Runs on | What the price leaves out |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nothing | Meetily Community | $0, open source | macOS, Windows. Linux from source | Speaker labels, which its pricing page lists under Pro |
| Nothing | OpenWhispr Free | $0, open source (MIT) | macOS, Windows, Linux | More than 5 hours of meeting recordings a month |
| Once | Second | $19 | Mac | Windows and Linux |
| Once | MacWhisper Pro | €64 per licence | Mac | Cloud AI, which runs on your own API key |
| Once | yapyap | €69, two computers | macOS, Windows, Linux | A free tier. There is a trial only |
| Once | Talat | $189, or $9 a month | Mac (Apple Silicon), Windows | Macs without Apple Silicon |
| Once | Superwhisper Pro | $249.99, or $8.49 a month | Mac, Windows, iOS, Android | A stated promise on future updates |
Free, and not a demo
Start here, because free is the cheapest way to pay once.
Meetily Community is open source and costs nothing. Its pricing page describes it as the full local transcription engine with local AI processing, and no Pro features. Speaker labels sit in Pro, which is $120 per user per year. Each Pro licence is valid for one device.
OpenWhispr is open source under MIT. Its Free plan lists unlimited local models, speaker labels and 5 hours of meeting recordings a month. Pro raises that to 20 hours for $8 a month or $80 a year. The page does not say whether the 5 hours count recordings transcribed on your own machine.
Two paid tools also keep a free tier underneath. MacWhisper's is labelled "Free forever". Superwhisper's free plan lists meeting recording and unlimited use of Whisper models.
If one of these covers the job, use it. A price paid once is still more than nothing.
Bought once
Second, $19. A Mac app that records system audio with no bot in the call. It writes speaker-labelled transcripts and notes as markdown files on your disk. It also gives Claude and Codex a command-line tool and an MCP connection to read them. It is the cheapest paid tool here by a wide margin.
MacWhisper Pro, €64. The page says "Pay Once" and "Includes lifetime updates". Pro lists automatic speaker recognition, meeting recording for Zoom, Teams and others, batch transcription, and system-wide dictation. It is sold through Gumroad or the App Store. My July notes had it at €59, so the price has moved once already.
Talat, $189. Talat sells the same app two ways: $9 a month, or a lifetime licence for $189. Its page says "One payment, no renewals ever" and "Every future update included". You get 10 free hours of recording first, with no account. It needs macOS 15 on Apple Silicon, or Windows 10 and later.
Superwhisper Pro, $249.99. Superwhisper sells the same Pro plan three ways: $8.49 a month, $84.99 a year, or $249.99 once. Its site marks lifetime as "Top choice". One licence covers all your devices: any number of Macs and Windows PCs, plus your phone. Superwhisper is a dictation tool first, though its free plan lists meeting recording.
yapyap, €69. One key covers two computers, on macOS, Windows or Linux. Speaker names and every write-up format are in the one price. There is a free trial with no card, and no account. The phone recorder, yapyap go, is free. yapyap is closed source, which Meetily and OpenWhispr are not.
What a one-time price can leave out
"Once" describes the invoice. It does not describe everything the tool needs from you. Five things to check before you pay.
Cloud AI is billed elsewhere. MacWhisper Pro, Superwhisper Pro and Talat all let you connect a hosted model with your own API key. That bill comes from the model provider, not the app. All three also run local models, which cost nothing per use. If you stay local, once means once.
Devices. MacWhisper is priced per licence, and its site has a section on licences and multiple devices. Read it before you buy for two Macs. Second and Talat do not state a device count on the pages I read. Superwhisper says one licence works on all your devices. yapyap covers two computers, and a third opens read-only.
Updates. Paid major versions are the classic catch in pay-once software. MacWhisper and Talat both state that updates are included. Second's page and Superwhisper's plans page do not say either way. My own promise of free updates is policy, not mechanism: nothing in the code enforces it. I wrote down why I will not break it in the arithmetic of selling software once.
Licence checks. This one is mine. An activated copy of yapyap must reach the licence server once every fourteen days to keep recording. Past that window it goes read-only until it has checked. Your library, search and export stay open throughout. The full terms are in what €69 once actually buys you.
Your operating system. Second and MacWhisper are Mac apps. Talat needs Apple Silicon or Windows. Meetily ships Mac and Windows apps and asks Linux users to build from source. Only OpenWhispr and yapyap list Linux in this table.
Why most note takers cannot sell once
Look at where the work happens. Every tool in the "once" rows transcribes on your computer. The vendor pays nothing when you record a three-hour workshop.
A cloud note taker pays for every minute you record. The audio goes to its servers, and servers bill by the month. So the vendor has to bill you by the month too. A one-time price there would lose money on its heaviest users.
That is the whole reason the list above is short. Selling once is only honest when the customer's machine does the work.
When renting is the better buy
A subscription is the right purchase in four cases.
You want a notetaker that joins the call by itself. Otter's joins Zoom, Teams and Google Meet automatically, then writes and shares the notes. Nothing in the pay-once rows does that. Otter Pro is $8.33 per user per month billed yearly, or $16.99 monthly.
Your team works from one shared notebook. Granola Business is $14 per user per month, with shared folders and connections to HubSpot, Attio and Notion. Otter syncs notes to Salesforce or HubSpot. yapyap has no team administration and no shared workspace, and I have said it will not build them.
Your computer is old. Local models want a recent machine. Superwhisper's own FAQ says Intel Macs work best with cloud models. If yours struggles, renting someone else's hardware is the practical choice.
You need it for one project. Talat's monthly plan is $9. Two months of interviews costs $18, against $189 for the lifetime licence. The lifetime price only wins after 21 months.
The sums
Otter Pro billed yearly comes to $99.96 a year. Second, MacWhisper Pro and yapyap each cost less than one year of that. Talat's lifetime licence costs just under two, and Superwhisper's two and a half. I am setting dollars against euros here, which is not exact, but no exchange rate changes the order.
For the longer version, with the costs a local app does not print, see the real cost of cloud transcription over three years.
Which to buy
Meetily Community or OpenWhispr if your budget is zero and the free limits fit your month.
Second if you are on a Mac and want the least money for meeting notes your AI tools can read.
MacWhisper Pro if you are on a Mac and also transcribe files, podcasts and video.
Talat if you want to try renting first and buy outright later, on a Mac or Windows.
Superwhisper Pro if dictation is the main job and meetings come second.
yapyap if you work across two computers, need Linux, or want several write-ups from one recording.
Otter or Granola if the notes belong to a team and not to you.
yapyap records, transcribes, and summarizes on the hardware you already own. No account, no subscription.
Free to try. No card, no account.
Then €69, once. Yours forever, every update included.
Your recordings never leave your computer.
